Where are they now?
Figurines archaeologically excavated from the Tlatilco site are largely in the collection of the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. Thousands of unprovenienced specimens, purchased by collectors from brickmakers and looters, are now in museum collections around the world.
Those collected by artist Diego Rivera form the basis of the Tlatilco collection of the private Anahuacalli Museum in Mexico City. Hundreds collected by May Company department store founder Martin May are now in the Saint Louis Art Museum. Another large collection was donated by collector Constance McCormack Fearing to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Many other museums in Europe and the Americas have Tlatilco collections.
The animation piece “209 Figurines…” was photographed from works in 12 museum collections, including those listed above.
Go to the Gallery to see each of the figurines in the animation piece, as well as information on the museum where it is currently located.
